The Gazette’s annual Athlete of the Year program honors the top area high school athletes of the academic year. This program includes a call for nominations, feature of top ten finalists, and overall male and female title recognition. A call for nominations goes out in April, with a finalist list of the top ten (five male, five female) voted on among Gazette sport’s department as well as area coaches. A publication featuring finalists and the winners will be published in mid-June. The print publication has a nice yearbook feel to it—a layout of photos, stats, and description of every finalist, and their athletic experiences/accolades to date.
Honorees will be recognized on a traveling school plaque and presented with an Athlete of the Year banner during the Fall semester. A presentation usually occurs at half time of a highly attended football game, where the honoree is able to return to accept the award with his or her coach and athletic director.
